Railway Rolling Stock Planning: Robustness Against Large Disruptions

چکیده
In this paper we describe a two-stage optimization model for determining robust rolling stock circulations for passenger trains. Here robustness means that the rolling stock circulations can better deal with large disruptions of the railway system. The two-stage optimization model is formulated as a large Mixed-Integer Linear Programming model. We first use Benders decomposition to determine optimal solutions for the LP-relaxation of this model. Then we use the cuts that were generated by the Benders decomposition for computing heuristic robust solutions for the two-stage optimization model. We call our method Benders heuristic. We evaluate our approach on the real-life rolling stock planning problem of Netherlands Railways (NS), the main operator of passenger trains in the Netherlands. The computational results show that, thanks to Benders decomposition, the LP-relaxation of the two-stage optimization problem can be solved in short time for a representative number of disruption scenarios. In addition, they demonstrate that the robust rolling stock circulation computed heuristically has total costs that are close to the LP lower bounds. Finally, we discuss the practical effectiveness of the robust rolling stock circulation: when a large number of disruption scenarios were applied to these robust circulations and to the non-robust optimal circulations, the former appeared to be much more easily recoverable than the latter.

A Comparison of Two Exact Methods for Passenger Railway Rolling Stock (Re)Scheduling
In passenger railway optimization one of the main goals is to make efficient plans that can accommodate all passengers or, if that is not possible, that minimize the seat shortages. In the planning process, a railway operator tries to match the demand by first selecting an appropriate timetable followed by a matching rolling stock schedule. We focus on the second stage where a rolling stock sch...

This paper deals with an investigation of combinatorial and robust optimization models to solve rolling-stock planning problems for passenger trains. Here robustness means that rolling-stock can better deal with some disruptions of the railway system. The proposed method is based on optimization and simulation techniques to handle the problem with imperfect information on data. The goal of the ...

In this paper we explore the possibility of applying the notions of Recoverable Robustness and Price of Recoverability (introduced by [5]) to railway rolling stock planning, being interested in recoverability measures that can be computed in practice, thereby evaluating the robustness of rolling stock schedules. In order to lower bound the Price of Recoverability for any set of recovery algorit...
متن کاملDisruption Management in PassengerTransportation - from Air to Tracks
Over the last 10 years there has been a tremendous growth in air transportation of passengers. Both airports and airspace are close to saturation with respect to capacity, leading to delays caused by disruptions. At the same time the amount of vehicular traffic around and in all larger cities of the world has show a dramatic increase as well. Public transportation by e.g. rail has come into foc...
متن کاملEvaluating disturbance robustness of railway dispatching measures
Railway traffic is operated according to a detailed (off-line) schedule of operations, specifying for each train its path through the network plus arrival and departure times at its scheduled stops. During daily operations disturbances perturb the plan and dispatchers take actions in order to keep operations feasible and to limit delay propagation. This paper presents a dispatching tool to hand...
